Super Legacy Rebuild - N23LF

I figured I'd share a little background on the rebuild/conversion of a Lancair Super Legacy formally owned by Lynn Farnsworth. Lynn was a long time LML participant and campaigned Race #44 at Reno for many many years. After the last engine failure at Reno it was parked and sat for many years until Lynn's passing. The new owners brought the airplane to me and we started a major overhaul of a lot of key systems, keeping and hopefully improving on the racing capability it has always had. Here is how the airplane showed up to me:

I spent some time at LyCon dialing in a basic fuel map for the new TSIO-550 which has been converted to electronic fuel injection and ignition. This is a low compression 550 with large turbos so it is a very interesting combination. With some internal oil passages modified, this engine also has an auxiliary oil pump to supplement the main oil pump. That extra volume is pumped externally to the front of the case where there has been traditionally very low pressure.

Boost control is electronically controlled the same way I set up my Lycoming Super Legacy. An automotive style boost controller regulates wastegate pressure through solenoid valves. The target boost pressure is set on the controller and then it does all the work for you. Also has overboost protection.

Anti detonation injection (ADI) and water spray nozzles are fed from the original tank slightly modified. The ADI uses the same automotive style fuel injector with a pressure regulator and return to the tank. The EFII system ramps in ADI flow at a set rate. Spray bars are a simple on/off with a manual pressure regulator.

Flight testing was exciting and the power levels have been gradually going up. With Reno gone I don't know if we'll ever get to see what it can do unfortunately.

Just wow, the detail is obviously high here, most people don't invest the time in 3D modeling and texturing the panel during the design phase, they let their customer guess how it will look, and work. With what Tom did here you can see exactly what they are going to get and you can be certain that the back side of the instruments fit and are accessible.
